What to expect from the preschool years

Preschool age starts at the age of 3 and continues all the way until the age of 5 when most children enter kindergarten.

Preschoolers are developing a sense of independence from their parents. They are eager to learn new things and spend time in a group setting, such a preschool class or peer group.

They are learning important social skills and how to function in a society. Following rules and daily routines are one of the many concepts they need to grasp before starting school.

Remember that the best way for preschoolers to acquire new skills and learn ideas is through play. Therefore it is crucial that your preschooler gets plenty of opportunities for free play.

Most preschool classrooms, however, offer some sort of formal learning as well. Children work in small groups for short periods of time. This is when they explore simple math concepts or learn to recognize letters and numbers.
